Description
The stone fish is a member of Synanceiidae other members the sting fish stinger and ghouls . the stone fish is one if not the most venomous fish in world. They mostly live in the ocean but they can also be found in rivers . they are often found in the indo pacific ocean and the Caribbean. Their nickname “stonefish” comes from the way that they camouflage to look like rocks. The real name for the stonefish is Synanceia .the adult stone fish grows to be 30 to 40 cm long . fun/scary fact they have 13 venomous and sharp spine on there back and a stone fish's venom can kill a human in under 2 hours.
Habitat
The stone fish live in the oceans and rivers they are usually found near rocky surfaces as it blends in very well with rocks and rublle hence the name stonefish that is how they keep preadateurs away and they don't chase there prey the stonefishes venom is for defensive puposes stone fish stings can happen on the beach as stone fish can on land for 24 hours .They are often found on the coast of Australia one of the many deadly marine animals from that country it is often found shallow waters along the coast . they eat other small fish mostly crustacea .
Symbiosis
It is quite common for a variety of small invertebrates such as anemones and hydroids to live on stone fish . They help the stonefish with camoflage and in return they get left overs which is mutualism .
Prey/predator adaptation
Stonefishes prey adaptation is it's stingers and its rocky look so they can camouflage and hide from predators such as the Sea Snake Stingrays and many other fish . It's predator adaptations are it patience and speed it wait for it's prey to go by and it will then catch up to it and eat it .
Comparisons
Stone fish comparison Grouper Similarities they each have there own form of camouflage. they live in the same ocean . They both ambush their respective prey . Differences are that the stonefish grows to be about 30 cm while the grouper can grow up to 4 ft . They also don't have venom.
