Stingray

Page history last edited by Mieke 10 years, 10 months ago

Description:

Stingrays are fish, they are carnivores and their body's are flat. They related to sharks, both stingrays and sharks don't have scales they have little hooks on their skin, so it is abrasive (harsh, rough). The end of stingrays tails are usually Poisonous and sharp. There are all kinds of different stingrays, here are some names of different stingrays; Spotted Eagle rays, manta rays, Cownose ray and many more. Stingrays can get as long as 14 feet. They can weigh from 1 to 750 pounds. Stingrays live for around 15-25 years.

Habitat:

Stingray's live in the sea, they aren't very active and their color helps them camouflage into the sand, so it's hard for predators to find them. They live in Africa, Asia and anywhere in the U.S.A.They prefer shallow water and they like hiding in the sand. Their tails are poisonous so if a predator comes near them they can pick the predator with their tail.

Predators:

Stingrays don't have many predators. But they do have a few predators like; sharks (hammerhead, lemon sharks) seals, sea lions and believe it or not humans. To avoid some predators they can sting them with their tail and some stingrays camouflage into the sand.

What they eat:

Stingrays eat a variety of different animals. Such as; crustaceans, worms, squid, smaller fish, clams, shrimps, snails and other kinds of fish. If a stingray is very hungry and it sees its prey but its prey is trying to swim away the stingray will chase after the prey and sting them with their tail. But if the stingray isn't that hungry it will let the prey escape (if the prey is trying to escape).

Symbiotic Interactions:

Stingrays have a relationship with blue-headed wrasses which have a relationship with angelfish. The relationship between stingrays and blue-headed wrasses are ; mutualistic, commensal, parasitic and predator relationships. When stingrays are dead the blue-headed wrasses clean off the stingray. Also they are predators when they are both alive so stingrays try to eat blue-headed wrasses and blue-headed wrasses try to clean stingrays. Sometimes stingrays will let the blue-headed wrasses clean them while stingrays just stay in the sand and lie there.

Species Comparison: sharks

Similarities

Both stingrays and sharks have a skeleton made out of cartilage. Eggs hatch from the inside of the female body and they are born alive. A obvious fact is that they are both fish and they are both carnivores. Both stingrays and sharks don't have scales they have little hooks on their skin.

Differences:

There are many different differences between stingrays and sharks, but here are some examples of a few differences. An obvious difference is their look stingrays glide in the water and sharks use their tail to move. Stingrays sting their tail at predators while sharks use their teeth and sharks will swim away with their tail. Sharks have "Pavement like crushing teeth" while stingrays have "no teeth".
